LYNYRD SKYNYRD TWENTY (SOLITARY CANYON). 1995-1997. Acrylics ,enamels and inks. 20×20 inches.
Ioannis: This painting was done soon after finishing the Allman Brothers Band painting. I always wanted to paint the west. Tom Lipsky from CMC/Sanctuary Records called me in the spring of 1997 “Lynyrd Skynyrd is doing an album for us and I would like you to do the cover.” I went to New York to meet with the band’s then long time manager Joe Boyland, who sadly passed away in March of 2009. He explained to me that this album was very important to the band because it marked the 20th anniversary of the tragic accident that took away the life of several band members. Joe stressed “The cover has to be memorable and mean something. Do you have any ideas?”
We looked at various CD designs and concepts I had done, Joe didn’t like any of them ”Do you have anything else?” All I had left was my portfolio of paintings that at the time were mostly done for myself. He turned to page three and stopped “This is perfect. This says it all” he said pointing to a painting called ( Solitary Canyon) that I had done in early 1995 originally for ABB. A few weeks later with a few digital changes the art shipped to the label. It was used as posters t-shirts, stickers, backstage passes, tour backdrops and on TV commercials.
The band was very moved and sent me a poster signed by everyone. I went on to do four more covers for the band. I also did a limited edition canvas print that is being sold in my store.
Price: THIS ARTWORK WAS SOLD FOR $10,000.00
